Idk and Idc what people assume or what the meaning of the lyrics actually are. Whenever I hear this song, I think of winter but fun winter. I'm talking sledding, ice skating, snowball fights, building a snowman, making snow angels, probably somebody falling in love as the snow lightly drifts down, friends laughing, the scenery of snowy mountains and snow on pine trees. I think it's one of those songs that you can have fun with, even if the meaning is quite dark, like children playing the "London bridge" or "Ring around the rosey" where the meaning behind it doesn't come to mind.

Robin Pecknold said this song was about all of his best friends losing their innocence. In the beginning of the song, he is following his friends which are all children as described in the song. The red scarfs are their "loss of innocence" as red represents danger and violence. When he turns around, he sees that another one of his friends is lost as he falls in the snow staining it red with blood. This represents the "loss of innocence" as well because white represents purity and innocence and he has stained it red. "From first grade to high school I spent every day with the same bunch of kids. And it was weird to see how people I had known so long would change so quickly - suddenly they're drug dealers.
